BOOKS - CLASSICS

What?

We read and discuss classic books. During the last year we have read and discussed eight books, ranging from Dickens (“A Christmas Carol”) to modern classics like “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists” was hard going and many of our members did not enjoy Le Carre’s “Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy”. Easier reads were du Maurier’s Rebecca”, Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” and Graham Greene’s “The Heart of the Matter” and last summer we read the very long “The Way we Live Now” by Anthony Trollop.

BRIDGE PLAYERS - MONDAY

What?

This is a mixed ability group. Most of our members are experienced Bridge players but we have (and we want to encourage) less experienced players who are now competent improvers.

This group is suitable for those who simply want to play Bridge socially and for those who want to gain experience and confidence by playing regularly. We play Chicago, rather than Rubber Bridge.

No tuition is given and those joining must have a minimum level of knowledge and competency in both the etiquette and technical aspects of the modern game.  Beginners should have completed a formal beginner’s class with U3A or elsewhere.  But we are a friendly group and where help is needed there are usually experienced players on hand willing to offer advice.

Most of our members play with a regular partner and most pairs base their bidding on the Modern Acol conventions published by the English Bridge Union.   Knowledge of at least basic Acol is therefore quite important.  Sociability and flexibility are also important as, from time to time, to accommodate odd numbers of players (not divisible by four) you may be asked to play three-handed bridge or to temporarily partner with any other member.

PHOTOGRAPHY 1

What?

We are a happy, vibrant group of photographers who get together to learn and discuss all things photographic.  Our depth of knowledge is taken from the group membership and all are encouraged to participate.  Technical aspects of photography are always covered and individual members try to help those with particular problems.  We try to organise the occasional field trip and associate it with work done at meetings.  This group is mostly for members with DSLR type cameras, although learning how to use your camera is more important than what type you have - you can get fantastic shots with just a compact.  An annual exhibition of work is becoming a permanent feature of the group and all are encouraged to make submissions for this.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

What?

Wanted!  Members interested in science (that's all sciences), technology, and related subjects.  No experience necessary - enthusiasm matters more.

What does the group do?  Principally, we meet once a month to listen to - and question - a speaker talking about an S&T topic.  Sometimes our speakers are experts from companies and research organisations, at other times the speakers are group members talking about their own experience and interests.  In the last year we also managed to squeeze in a quiz.

We've been running a blog for a while now, so you can find out far more about the group by accessing the blog at https://cu3asandt.wordpress.com/

Change is good - so we have several  ideas for expanding our activities.  It would be good to involve members more, in an undemanding way.  A poster session, perhaps. Or even 'Google-based' research into a range of topics?  But this depends on the members, of course.  And, if anyone would like to play a part - small or large - in running the group, they won't be turned away!

If you have any questions, just contact David, the group leader, on 01276 21421, and leave your name, if possible your e-mail address, and your phone number.
