ARCHAEOLOGY

Monthly: Monday pm

The group has flourished after two years with much help from Surrey Heath Archaeological and Heritage Trust which provides our meeting place at the Bagshot centre. In the coming year, apart from formal talks, we hope to take on a particular research project with guidance from the Trust.

ART MAGAZINE

Monthly: Monday pm

This is the former Art Discussion group. It has been renamed and rescheduled to dovetail with its sibling group Art Matters. Whilst Art Matters focuses throughout the year on a particular theme, Art Magazine embraces the full range of topics associated with the visual arts. This is a self help group. Sessions begin with a general discussion around matters of current interest (e.g. what members have seen recently, press articles or TV programmes), followed by presentations or other activities prepared in advance by members. No formal background in the Arts is needed - just lots of interest, a willingness to participate and to share one's learning with others. Members are asked to bring to the first session details of a work of art (perhaps a postcard) which they will be willing to speak about for a few minutes at some time during the year.

ART MATTERS

Monthly: Monday pm

Art Matters is a self help group that meets on the 4th Monday of the month at St. Pauls's Church, Garden Room, from 2.30 to 4.00pm. Following this year's successful look at Seascapes and Marine paintings, our theme for 2008/2009 will be American Art, from Native Americans to modern days. Members are encouraged to use a range of presentation methods and there is plenty of support in the group. All welcome

BADMINTON

This group meets on Wednesdays at Heatherside Community Centre.

BOOK CLUBS

Book Club - Monthly: Monday am

This U3A Book Club meets on the first Monday morning of every month in term time. We decide as a group which book we would like to read - a recommendation, an award winner, a favourite author - and discuss it in a friendly way the following month. We are largely reading contemporary fiction, but not exclusively so. Our only problem is that it is a popular group and spaces are limited!

Classics & Biography - Monthly: Friday am

We discuss Classic Literature and any books that would appear to be a classic of the future. Members put forward their suggestions as to what they would like to read and decide which book it will be. We discuss the author, where possible, as their life experiences are relevant to their authorship.

Bookends - Monthly: Monday am

This Book Club meets on the first Monday of the month at a private venue, so it's a small and informal group. We read one book a month.

BRIDGE

Beginners - Weekly: Friday am

This is a new Beginners class suitable for those who have never played bridge, whist, mini bridge or who have limited bridge experience and wish to learn more.

Improvers - Weekly: Thursday am

The group was formed from the Beginners Classes for people wanting to continue playing under 'supervision' in a congenial atmosphere where there is plenty of advice on hand and some formal instruction (particularly during the Autumn and Spring terms). The instruction covers bidding, defence, play and the mechanics of Duplicate Bridge. The objectives are to continue to learn how to enjoy playing and be confident to go forward to the 'joys' of club play. Some reasonable previous instruction in the game or experience of playing the game is essential. Partners are not required so individuals would be welcome, as would new U3A members.

Players - Weekly: Monday pm

The current group consists of a mix of those who have played Bridge for some years and those who have taken it up in retirement. There are those who play Rubber and others Chicago Bridge. No tuition is given and it is recommended that newcomers have had some tuition through U3A Beginners or Adult Education Classes before joining. We are a friendly group and where some help is needed there is usually a willing experienced player to offer advice. The group provides a means of gaining experience and confidence.

CARS

Classic Cars - Contact the Group leader for meeting arrangements

For people who are interested in or own a classic car, to meet for a talk and/or a drive.

Car Maintenance - Contact the Group leader for meeting arrangements

Having been in the motor trade all my working life I know there are many people who lack confidence in basic car maintenance e.g. checking oil, filling windscreen wiper washers, when and how to use anti-freeze, taking tyre pressures - the types of checks recommended by the vehicle manufacturer to be undertaken weekly. Also, understanding when action is needed. I can help three people at a time (with their cars), at my home. In the Newsletter you will find the dates I can offer - if you are interested, please contact me to book one of the slots. There are three available for each hour.

COMPUTING

Beginning Computing - Fortnightly: Tuesday pm

The personal computer is now very much a part of everyday life and anyone without some appreciation of what the PC can do is operating at a disadvantage. The aim of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the PC, to learn how to operate it via the mouse and keyboard and provide an introduction to the vast range of things that can be done by easy-to-use software.
With modern machines and software there is nothing of "rocket science" or detailed programming needed to be able to use a computer. However, getting past the basic tasks of switching on and pressing the right buttons does often need some help and some repetition to achieve the familiarity necessary for confident use of the equipment. How much can be covered will depend on what people want to do and are able to do.

A Beginners Guide to the Internet - Fortnightly: Tuesday pm

These sessions will give members the opportunity to learn the new technology of the World Wide Web. Some of the key subjects to be covered will include:-
- What is a Browser and how to use it?
- Signing up with an ISP and sending emails.
- Searching for information on the web.
- Online Banking and Buying and Selling.

top

CRAFT

Craft - Fortnightly: Wednesday pm

We are a self-help group. We all have different talents and are pleased to share them one with another.
We make many things from Greetings Cards to decorated clothing. The Autumn Term is going to be mainly about Christmas, with gifts and cards and ideas to make the season bright.

Patchwork Quilting - Fortnightly: Tuesday, am - Beginners, pm - Developers

There are fortnightly meetings to discuss, review, plan and/or work on ideas brought by members. People are welcome to come to learn the skills and to develop these according to their individual tastes.

top

DANCE GROUP

Fortnightly: Tuesday pm

This group offers a chance to refresh those dancing skills that may have been lying dormant in recent years or indeed for those new to dancing who just wish to learn how to "get around the floor". It is expected that we can offer live music and included in the afternoon there will be some basic tuition in Ballroom/Latin or Sequence dancing for most sessions. We have the services of experienced dancers. From the Autumn Term we will meet twice a month.

DIGITAL CAMERA WORKSHOP

Digital Camera Workshop - Fortnightly: Tuesday pm

The aim of the workshop is primarily one of self help where attendees are able to discuss their problems with any aspect of digital photography. There are opportunities to demonstrate their skills / problems and seek advice. The sessions are aimed at those people who either have a digital camera and personal computer, or are about to purchase one, and who are prepared to run all or part of a session.
Session 1 - Bring your camera and be prepared to say a few words about it. Why you chose it, what problems you have.
Session 2 - Understanding the technology - presentation.
Sessions 3-5 - The subjects covered here are largely dependent upon the requirements of those attending.
Depending upon the number of attendees and the number of sessions, there will be opportunities to take part and demonstrate personal skills, find solutions to problems, to learn and talk about new ideas.
Requirements:
Ideally, each member of the group should have a digital camera and PC, or be about to buy one. There is usually access to a laptop and a projector, or you can bring your own equipment if desired to demonstrate some aspect of the subject, which is encouraged.
Please email the group leader rather than phone if you have any queries, or require further information.

DISCUSSION GROUPS

Group 1 - Fortnightly: Thursday pm

The Discussion Group always finds some topic to discuss. Admittedly we do not always stick strictly to the subject but discussion always throws up new thoughts and ideas. We enjoy our light hearted discussions, then have tea and biscuits and follow up with local news or happenings in the world on which we all may have varied opinions, so much the better. We don't fall out we agree to differ!!

Group 2 - Fortnightly: Wednesday am

This group has had some very interesting and lively discussions on a variety of topics. We meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 10am to 12 noon. New members are welcome though numbers would be limited to be able to maintain comfort and an informal atmosphere.

top

DRAMA WORKSHOP

Fortnightly: Tuesday am

This group is for absolutely anybody, from people who have never acted before - or even set foot in a theatre - to those who are experienced in acting or directing at all levels. The only requirement is participation: this is a workshop in which, in small groups or perhaps all together, we explore and rehearse both scripted plays and improvised situations. All for fun: no learning lines, no public performances, no worries! This year our repertoire has included 'Blithe Spirit' by Noel Coward, 'Bright and Bold Design' by Peter Whelan, and some scenes from Shaw and Shakespeare. We're a jolly crowd, but numbers are limited.

FAMILY HISTORY

Fortnightly: Friday am

Discovering your ancestry is fun, exciting, addictive and sometimes surprising. We offer a format which we hope will appeal to all abilities:
   Beginners - 9:30am to 10:30am
   Coffee
Beginners and Experienced Researchers - 11am to 12:15pm approx.
Beginners are invited to join a course of lessons over two terms to get started, using basic sources of Civil Registration, Census and Parish Registers among others. Some information will be given on the use of the internet (use of a computer is helpful but not essential). It is desirable to attend as many sessions as possible, but many previous students have repeated the course to fill in gaps and revise. After coffee, Beginners are joined by Experienced Researchers to share experiences and knowledge. Group members contribute to a wide and varied programme of talks and discussions and we have all been amazed at how much we have learned from one another. Everyone is interested in everyone else's Family History.

HOME MAINTENANCE

Tuesday pm. See Newsletter for meeting dates

There may be quite a few members of our U3A who feel somewhat nervous about coping with the minor repairs and general maintenance that are needed from time-to- time in almost every home. Of course, one solution is simply to call in a professional. But how can you be sure that what they tell you, or what they charge you, is reasonable? Indeed, maybe you could tackle the job yourself if you knew a little more about it. At the very least, if you have a good understanding of what the work involves, you will be able to check that the professional is not exaggerating what needs to be done or what it will cost. It will be difficult for this group to do very much practical work, so the emphasis will be on describing - simply! - how to carry out simple tasks. Also, there will be plenty of explanation of how things function and what to do when they don't!

MUSIC APPRECIATION

Monthly: Thursday pm

The Group meets in High Cross Chapel, Camberley at 2pm on the second Thursday of the month from October to June. It is run jointly by two regular presenters, each choosing their own varied selection of classical music, usually on alternate months. Each presentation lasts for two hours, with a tea/coffee break at mid-session. We try to cater for most tastes and the overall yearly content covers instrumental, chamber, orchestral, vocal and choral music, from the Baroque period through to the twentieth century. Each piece of music is given a short introduction. New members are always welcome, so why not come along to listen and relax in pleasant surroundings with friendly people. Classical music does not have to be stuffy - join us and give it a try - you may be pleasantly surprised.

top

PAINTING WORKSHOP

Fortnightly: Tuesday pm

We are a friendly self-help group, working on a variety of subjects in watercolour, pastel or pencils. New members, with some experience, are always welcome.

top

POETRY

Fortnightly: Wednesday pm

The group flourishes and expands. We meet to read aloud and enjoy poetry of all kinds, serious, funny, remembered, new, poets of the past and modern, whatever the group members wish. We would also welcome any shy souls who would rather just listen than read. While we often discuss and investigate poems the intention is not to become too academic and serious but to meet for an hour or two of enjoyment and stimulation.

top

PSYCHOLOGY

Fortnightly: Wednesday pm

Psychology is the "Science of Mind and Behaviour"
We will cover the main philosophies behind the thinking, research and explanations of mind and behaviour, which will necessarily involve a quick sprint through the historical evolution of this science. Accompanying this I would also want members to be aware of the major debates threading through all psychological thinking. For example, do humans freely choose to behave as they do or is behaviour determined by other factors? Is who we are and what we do governed by our genetic inheritance or the way we have been raised? Is it right to do research on people/animals?
Having covered the thinking framework, we can look at some specific human behaviours and explore what Psychology, the science, makes of them. Along the way we shall encounter some classic experimental work. The list of behaviours is endless.
For any new recruits to the group this autumn we will follow the programme started in term one.
For those continuing from term one we will broaden our knowledge of the whole field of psychological exploration of human behaviour building on knowledge gained in term one.

top

RECORDER ENSEMBLE

Fortnightly: Tuesday am

The Camberley U3A Recorder Ensemble is now firmly established and playing a variety of music. The first perfomance at an event occurred in April and we hope there will be other opportunities from time to time. New members are always welcome at our Tuesday fortnightly meetings. Complete beginners will be offered coaching before the main sessions so they can be quickly absorbed into the ensemble. So go on! What's stopping you? Dust off the old descant or take up the treble or tenor and contact the group leader.

SAINTS ALIVE! 2

Fortnightly: Friday am

Saints Alive! is back in the September term with another set of saints to recognise. We will pick up where we left off at the end of Series 1 by studying logical groups of saints including those associated with the various religious orders. Series 2 is particularly suited to those members who have attended the Series 1 sessions. If there is sufficient demand the Series 1 sessions will be repeated at a later date.

top

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Monthly: Monday pm

The group is aimed at both scientists and non scientists who are interested in learning more about topical subjects from a technical viewpoint. After a successful second year when we explored the theme of Power and Energy, we will continue to offer high calibre talks by visiting speakers together with contributions from our own members. A visit to an interesting location will be planned for the summer term.

We are not too strict and we promise that you will enjoy the morning and learn some new words in the company of like-minded players. Occasionally we play against other U3A Scrabble groups. Why don't you come along and give it a try?

SINGING FOR FUN

Fortnightly: Thursday pm

This group continues on a fortnightly basis at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church, Portsmouth Road, Frimley. In order to keep a balance of male/female voices, recruiting will be concentrated on sopranos and, of course, men. Our repertoire is light and popular. We do try three and four-part arrangements, but there is also unison singing. Apart from our fortnightly meetings, we entertain at homes, day-centres and clubs. Sometimes they even ask us to return!

top

SOCIOLOGY

Monthly: Wednesday am

Sociology is concerned with how our society is structured, how we behave within it, the conflicts that occur, and how they might be dealt with.
We shall have a particular topic at each meeting. In the first half we shall consider the facts, as best we can, from a variety of perspectives. After a tea break we shall get into small groups to discuss questions arising from the day's topic and then get together to compare our answers.
This group is for anyone who is interested in how the society we live in operates and who enjoys a lively discussion. Sometimes we may invite outside experts to talk to us.

We are a friendly, sociable group who have had some very enjoyable outings. Please contact the group leader for further information.

top

TAI CHI

Weekly: Monday pm

This is an amazingly popular class. Again most participants are continuing but I really don't want to exclude new members who may be keen to enjoy and benefit from this practice. If you speak to current practitioners, they will tell you that it is a system with slow progression but incredibly relaxing, energising and strength building.

top

TAP DANCING

Fortnightly: Friday pm

Tap Dancing for adults is a very good form of aerobic exercise. It can help with balance, posture and co-ordination, and it also tones up the muscles - especially the legs! So if you prefer taking your exercise to music, then this tap dancing class could be what you are looking for. You may have tapped when you were young or perhaps this is your first time? With or without experience, we aim for this class to be fun!

THEATRE

Dates as advertised in the newsletter

This is a group for all theatre lovers! Trips are currently arranged to the New Victoria Theatre in Woking and mostly for the Wednesday matinee. Numbers are not large enough for coach travel, so people make their own way there. Tickets are very favourably priced because we are given a group rate. Many shows that come to this theatre are pre- or post-London runs. The types of drama we choose suit all tastes: from ballet to light opera, from whodunits to Shakespeare and modern dramatists to musicals. We need ten for each group booking. Obviously we do not meet on a regular basis but a list is produced from time to time to tickle your fancy! This will be sent to you. There is no restricted membership of the group and you are welcome to invite family and friends to any of the outings.

top

TRAVEL AND TOURISM

Dates as advertised in the newsletter

This group is organising a number of trips and outings and talks. The 4 day trip to Prague was enjoyed by all those who went and more exciting destinations are planned.

WALKS

Walking - Fortnightly: Wednesday am

We have 2 groups, one which meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month and the other on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
We produce a Schedule of Walks for the year, giving outline details of each walk. Most of the walks are about 5 miles and normally start within a 15-mile radius of Camberley. Both groups have members who volunteer to either lead walks or act as back-ups, and this works very well. We have been very encouraged to find that often after their first year of membership, we have new volunteers and thus new walks, so widening our knowledge of fairly local areas. The social contact between walkers is very enjoyable, both on the walk itself and at some local hostelry at the end of a walk where we can congratulate ourselves for having a healthy life-style.

Strolling - Monthly: Tuesday am

We stroll the last Tuesday of the month. The stroll is about 2 to 3 miles long, at a steady pace; we do have time to look around though! We walk over various terrains, and go over stiles. After our walk we visit a pub (optional).
The only downside to this is, I am afraid this group cannot take any more strollers for the time being as my register is full. I will, however, be taking names for a waiting list. I cannot at this stage say how long you will have to wait to go on the register. As soon as I have a space I will get in touch with the first name on the list, and so on.

Ambling - Fortnightly: Tuesday am

This is a small group for those who, for whatever reason, like to take their time. No stiles, no steep hills and no hurry. Ambles are no longer than 2 miles, taking about 1¼ hours. Time to stop and stare. New members welcome.

WINE TASTING

Monthly - Contact Group leader for meeting dates

This self-help group has enjoyed another convivial year, tasting wines from many countries. A highlight was an excellent dinner at Farnborough Tech. Because we meet in private houses, our numbers are necessarily restricted.

top

YOGA
